PostPosted: Feb 22, 2022 10:52    Post subject: Fluorite but from where?

Good day,

Wandering around the forum I noticed this interesting section that is right for me and will probably do so in the future as well. My label shows the origin of this semi-transparent purple fluorite "Illinois, USA". if someone kindly knew the exact origin would do me a big favor.

Thanks in advance.

Enzo,

Your fluorite is a classic example from Hardin County, in southern Illinois. If the drusy white mineral on some of the cube faces is calcite, it is likely from the Denton Mine like the one pictured below.

Michael is right, most likely from Denton Mine, but we won't find out for sure. So if you put "Hardin County, Illinois, USA" on the label it should be accurate.

I agree with much of above. But the white microcrystals can also be barite or quartz.. A quick test with HCL to check for reaction will verify if it is calcite (fizzes) or quartz/barite (no reaction).

Hi Michael:

Nice specimen. It looks a lot like those I have (and will be posting) from Deardorff Mine too. Nice piece - keep up the good work.

Best

Silvia
