June has arrived, and with it will come the Summer Solstice, so, a new edition of a large Mineral Festival, namely Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines 2023!
Although there is still a week left until the start of the event, it's time to think about the necessary logistics.

Of the countless temptations offered by the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines Show, in addition to the beautiful Alsace region itself, there are two that are a must-visit, these are the 'Prestige' display at the ValExpo zone and the 'Piscine Exposition' at the Piscine zone.
Both exhibitions feature the participation of important institutions that display part of their mineral collections. Specifically, for this year, the 'Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle' in Paris, the Natural Museum of Luxembourg, and the University of Strasbourg/EOST Museum are participating in the 'Prestige - ValExpo', while pieces from private collections and institutions will be exposed at the 'Piscine'

First day at the Show on a personal level after the journey, and once arrived, heading directly to the heart of Alsace.
For many, it's a day of setup, while others have yet to arrive, and some are already in full swing. In this context, one goes around like a headless chicken, looking for the first pieces for their collection. It's important to be cautious and somewhat detached because haste is often not good.
However, as a mere spectator in retrospect, I have witnessed the frenzy surrounding minerals. And that frenzy was caused by batches of Aragonite from Los Molinillos, Spain. In this case, Miguel David Martínez has presented a series of very striking specimens from this classic locality for this type of mineral, causing a small "gold rush" to acquire some of them.
Minerals never cease to amaze us.

My only (so far) visit to Ste. Marie mineral show was in 2019.
I flew in from Iceland, to Frankfurt, though I was staying with friends near Freiburg in Germany and drove in on a rental car each day.
It was so hot... and I was very glad they show organizers had the water spray for us visiting to cool off a bit.
...and following is my reason to comment...
...as I was leaving after the show... taking a flight again out of Frankfurt, I had checked in and only had carry on luggage
....obviously most of it was just my "rocks"
....and as I was going through security... I was not allowed to pass
...they didn't tell me what was the potential problem... didn't let me near my bag... didn't listen to me explaining that I had my mineral samples in there nor let me open or get near to it to show them.
I was only told to wait... a couple of minutes later, two security policemen showed up, with their submachineguns.
They let me approach my bag, and open it and they looked in... and then quite aggressively said to the security staff... what the hell were they calling them for... this guy just has a couple of rocks in his bags... this isn't' a security issue at all!
...then as they walked away... I heard one say to the other..."not like he was carrying illegal diamonds or anything... crazy"
hehe
Indeed my budget isn't for anything of the sort that should ever be a reason to report to customs... it's even less so a thing to have as an "issue" regarding security.
...and as far as I can tell... it being a flight within the Schengen area... maybe they would have a reason to alert the customs in Iceland that I was arriving with potentially valuable cargo... it couldn't ever have been a security issue in any way.
I'm sure many of us have had questions raised by customs and security in our travels, but that was my strangest one.... and agreed upon.
Most of the time, when I've gotten questions about my luggage.... they're just curious... as it is so unusual to have anyone carrying rocks :-)
