PostPosted: Aug 07, 2009 04:16    Post subject: What makes a crystal to "sing" ?

Greetings everyone !

I was having a close look at some Zhob smokey quartz cluster yesterday, holding it & turning it again & again, when at some point it produced a sound. I found out that some areas, when stroke produce a more or less high pitched sound, somewhat reminding of the sound of bambou flute from Peru.

This is the third time only I come accross a "singing" crystal. I had a while ago a Kunzite crystal, shaped like a blade, which also produced a high-pitched sound when human skin friction was applied.

The very first encounter was with a quartz crystal a friend working in a mineralogical shop in Paris had stumbled upon. THe involved phenomenom was different as the sound. It was a clear quartz crystal, with single termination, and another tiny crystal was perpendiculary protruding from the main one, slightly above the base.
My friend used the little quartz as a hook to attach a thin string and hold it from there. Then with another piece of crystal, he hit the quartz crystal, which produced the most beautifull & surprising sound, very... crystaline, yes ! ahah ! Very similar to that of a champagne "flûte", just of higher pitch. Wow ! I was totally gobsmacked.

So I'm wondering, why do some crystal produce a sound, while not other, why do some have only parts of them producing a sound, while other not ? Some subtle difference I guess, but of which nature ?

My Zhob quartz cluster has a few enhydro and skeletal features, so I guess the cavities might play some role. BUt the Kunzite was plain & full with no cavities.

If Anyone ahs some ideas & suggestiosn toshare, I'd be very glad !

Cheers !

Aymeric
