I found this light weight shining black stone at the shores of marina beach. What type of stone is this?

far too small and photos too impossible for identification and needs more tests. black rock and beach says to me bonfire garbage could be anything from rock to burnt wood to a piece of cheap meat burnt or just rubish something so small and generic could be any old bit of garbage and not identifiable by photo alone really

You need to retake the photo and do it on a neutral grey piece of paper. On this photo, the camera focused on the background and so the black stone is much too fuzzy (out of focus) for us to tell anything about it.

It looks like black dates, but I am 100 percent sure it is a rock.

If you have or can borrow a good gram scale, you can measure the density. That will tell us a lot.

PostPosted: Jan 17, 2024 05:56    Post subject: Re: Need to identify black stone

I know members are trying to be polite and 'helpful' to the limited extent possible when people post bad pictures and NO OTHER essential information. I think answering them, even marginally does not help anyone. I think they should be sent the url to the information that should be given [size, location, streak, specific gravity, etc., etc.] before the thread goes on. Sadly, people not only do not know how to identify many of the rocks they find, but they do not understand what information is needed to have any reasonable chance at anyone here giving a reasonable answer - but that is all nicely on the website - But noticed by NO novices. Is there not a way it could be made more noticeable [although this would only have a limited effect]?
