Thanks to Eddy for this historical work! Magical is the only way I can describe this. I got the book in the mail last week. I'm only beginning to sample the richness of the photos and diagrams. The ke ...

Thanks again for the opinions. I've contacted Frank van Betuw of the Otago Rock and Mineral club in Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand, who has passed the photos and explanation on to some local zeoli ...

Thanks all for your comments! I just tested the material and it does not fizz in HCl. I also just realized I've got large tabular crystals of Baryte from Morocco that appear identical to these tiny o ...

The crystals look a bit "thin" for heulandite for me. Maybe Baryte?

Thanks Steve, It does look like a tabular Baryte, and there is no pearly luster as with heulandite. I should add that t ...

I would appreciate any opinions regarding what the orange, tabular crystals in this natrolite specimen from South Island, New Zealand might be. I've attached a picture of the full specimen, then a cou ...

PostForum: Minerals and Mineralogy   Posted: Mar 23, 2014 14:18   Subject: Calcite crystals of the Faraday Mine
A question for the crystallographically-inclined. I recently obtained my second large Faraday calcite specimen. The hematite-involved calcite crystals from the Faraday Mine seem quite unique. They are ...

I think of myself as a curator of my specimens; the provenance is part of the specimen. I don't pay much more for a specimen "just" because it is from a well-known collector, although perhap ...

Thanks Pete! I appreciate your drawing it out for me.

Most of the basalts along the western shore of Lake Superior (Minnesotan's call it the North Shore) aren't very vuggy. There are some very big ...

This is a fun surprise. I found this in a small vug in basalt on the edge of a parking lot. The locality I've mentioned before, the Onion River, just south of Lutsen, Minnesota. The specimen is about ...

One more, a lovely double terminated Baryte group on limestone from the Linwood Mine. The Linwood mine produces some interesting Baryte and very fine calcites and Barytes. This one consists of a remar ...
