I would bet just about anything that the base of this crystal is not schorl. Many, many black tourmalines are not schorl. It is difficult to imagine that the composition could have changed that much while the crystal was growing. Just a small amount of iron could make an elbaite black, and crystals growing in a pegmatite tend to absorb all of the iron available in the growth environment before incorporating other elements.

John,

I uploaded those photos at Mindat last November as if the specimen were elbaite, but the specialist who reviews the posts quickly responded "Your photo might not be the mineral you said it is. Schorl is frequently dark green or dark blue, elbaite is not like this.". So I had to correct the species' name and use the expression "schorl with elbaite termination" just to be allowed to post my pictures there.

Since I don't have a great knowledge of the tourmalines chemistry, and performing chemical analysis is not an option for me (I own a lot of schorls or whatever they could be), I must believe what other people say. In this case it's clear there's a contradiction that should be solved.

Thanks for your interest,

I totally agree and I would like to know who the "mindat specialist" is because he could not be more wrong.

Cassiterite, muscovite

Huge polysynthetic cassiterite crystals complete on all sides, set on a matrix of bladed muscovite crystals. Despite the large size, the crystals are intact and undamaged, the edges are in perfect shape, no microchipping visible anywhere. Overall size: 100 mm x 95 mm. Cassiterite group: 83 mm wide. Weight: 1128 g.

Mt Xuebaoding, Pingwu Co., Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China.

A very similar specimen, likely from the same pocket, published in the book "Fine Minerals of China", Guanghua Liu, page 276, and in the German magazine "Lapis", #26/27, year 2004, "China - Das aktuelle Mineralien-Paradies", page 175. Another one very probably from the same pocket too is figured in the inside front cover of The Mineralogical Record, November-December 2011, vol. 42, #6, in an advertisement of Kristalle.

Carles, you know we talked about this before, but this cassiterite is just incredible! An absolutely stunning eyecatcher, congratulations again :-)

Hübnerite, quartz

Group of several tabular black hübnerite crystals aesthetically set on a spray of diverging Tessin habit quartz crystals. From a pocket (Labor Teo) found at the end of 2009. Overall size: 115 mm x 96 mm. Hübnerite main crystal: 26 mm long x 12 mm wide x 10 mm thick. Weight: 230 g.

From Labor Teo, Mundo Nuevo Mine, Huamachuco, Sanchez Carrion Province, La Libertad Department, Peru.

These photos don't make justice. It's hard to get photos good enough from transparent and colorless crystals in combination with black crystals.

Hübnerite, quartz

Parallel, prismatic, terminated, black hübnerite crystals with colorless quartz. Overall size: 115 mm x 103 mm. Hübnerite longest crystal: 80 mm tall. Main quartz crystal: 115 mm long. Weight: 605 g. No attachment point. It's a floater: all the lower surface is covered by a second generation of quartz.

Huayllapon mine, Pasto Bueno, Pallasca, Ancash, Peru. According to the mineralogist Cosme Pérez-Puig Obieta this specimen may have been extracted from the Chabuca vein in the Huayllapon mine.

The hübnerite in Pasto Bueno District was created [millions of years ago] by precipitation from a hydrothermal solution generated by magmatic processes (Ref.: Book "Minerals", by George W. Robinson, Simon & Schuster, year 1994, page 199, excellent work to anyone interested in the genesis of minerals).

Elbaite, quartz, mica, albite?

Translucent prismatic crystals of elbaite showing two color zones set upon a matrix of lustrous mostly transparent slightly smoky to colorless quartz crystals, with mica and several small tabular colorless crystals that might be albite. Overall size: 65 mm x 57 mm x 50 mm. Main elbaite crystal: 45 mm tall, 13 mm wide. Weight: 135 g. Complete all around. Belonged to Lloyd Tate collection until 2009, who had acquired it in 2000 after being in an old German collection.

Himalaya Mine, Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA.

This deposit has produced tens of thousands of specimens for more than a century, many of them of high quality, although the vast majority, as can be seen at Mindat database, lack a matrix, or at least a decent matrix.
