PostPosted: Apr 15, 2011 16:15    Post subject: Large Amethyst Clusters From Amazon

I have been trying to get some large Bolivian amethyst clusters which seem to be getting harder to find and more expensive to aquire. My friend in Brazil has sugguested I take a look at some of the large amethyst clusters they are finding up in the Amazon. He sent me the following pictures and states the mine is Copia de Maraba Mine in the amazon. I not sure what location they are from in the amazon but I'm going to find out.

Here is a sample of a large Bolivian amethyst cluster weighing 214 kilograms currently available. Price wise the Bolivian is going for almost twice as much per kilogram as the large clusters from the amazon. The Bolivian is beautiful but seems to be getting very expensive to aquire. I'm wondering what the forum members think of the large amethyst clusters from the amazon compared to the Bolivian?

The photographs of pockets and mine, i.e. specimens in situ are especially interesting! Thank you! As in every locality the quality covers a spectrum but sure will be interesting to see some of the best from this deposit.

I made a mistake posting one of the pictures. The amethyst in amethyst01.jpg was from Rio Grande do sul not the amazon mine.

As you can see in a couple of the pictures a lot is amethyst coming from the mine is covered with some kind of mineral deposit. I'm sure some of the forum members would have some idea of what it is. The quality of a lot of the amethyst is very good. They have been making polished points and sphere etc from the amethyst with mineral deposits as in the pictures below. Some of the large polished points are over 31.5 cm and weight 9 kilograms. Some of the spheres are up to 15cm in diameter.
