PostPosted: May 15, 2014 16:55    Post subject: How can restoring color of a crystal?

Hi all members,
I heard that some crystal treated so that crystal luster and transparency would be greater. Does anyone know the procedure for treating crystals?
For example, if we want the color of a amethyst to be beautiful and remain constant)?
Thanks for any information.

Hi Abbasi!
There is a lot of literature about gemstone enhancement. I can suggest you the book "Gemstone Enhancement" by Kurt Nassau, it is somewhat dated, but still valid. Quartzes are commonly treated in order to enhance their colour and/or their brightness. But the issue doesn't concern only quartzes.

Just google quartz enhancement, there's tons of info out there on it. You can bake amethyst to turn it yellow and look like citrine, you can irradiate quartz it to make it smoky or black, you can dye it with a variety of dye processes, and so on. Treated quartz is very common in the industry. Just please be honest to your buyers, all too many people enhance crystals and then try to pass them off as natural. I have nothing against enhancement, but in life deception should always be condemned, right? :)
