PostPosted: Jun 03, 2014 19:49    Post subject: The colorless Variscite crystals from Torre de Moncorvo (Portugal)

The large iron deposits of Torre de Moncorvo (Bragança, Portugal) are well known among collectors by its phosphate minerals. Here I present Variscite samples, collected in the Fragas da Carvalhosa mine.
As you know, the Strengite and Variscite forms a series, with variable iron and aluminium content. The elemental analysis in this case is not clear, suggesting a (very) iron-rich Variscite, but the Raman spectroscopy perfomed on samples is determinant: the crystals are Variscite.
Is a possibility that some Variscite from this mine were incorrectly regarded as Strengite (just see the correspongind Mindat entry), so, for those interested in the correct labelling, I suggest to revisit your specimens.
