A wonderful calcite/amethyst combination from Cata Mine - but my favourite is that wonderful gemmy topaz from Katlang, fine one!

Mike,
I love the dioptase and quartz specimen. At first I thought I was looking at a South African ajoite specimen, but then I saw the close up pictures. It could just be that dioptase is such a pesky mineral to photograph because of the blue-green pleochroism and the strong bi-refringence.
I also enjoyed the fluorite on spessartine from Tongbei, China and I agree with Bob (Gneissware) that siderite on quartz from the San Antonio Mine, Mexico is a fantastic specimen.

Those Dal'negorsk Fluorites are stunning. From a recent find?
I was browsing through this thread and I noticed your distinctive way of photographing. I cannot put my finger on what exactly it is that make these pictures stand out, but I do like it.
They are somewhat darker than those from other photographers, perhaps with a little more contrast. Where others (including myself) try to have some sort of gradient in the background to provide depth, this lacks in your photo's. Still you manage to put some form of depth in the picture, which I like a lot.
May I ask what kind of setup/technique you use to photograph your specimens?

Thanks Philip.
We picked up the fluorites 1 or 2 years ago in Tucson.
I shoot the minerals on a glass tabletop. I sometimes use LED lamps for lighting, but most of the time employ a number of flash units.
I manipulate the lighting and contrast to bring out the depth and micro detail in each mineral.
At least that's what I try to do. I think it works most of the time.
