The "Herderite" may be from the Gilgit district, i.e from the area around Shengus but they occur also in the Shigar area further to the west.

Whenever I see this white-tipped amethyst, I remember the article in Lapidary Journal that described how this specimen was brought out on a donkey and ended up in the Smithsonian, probably 45 years ago now.

Les, I can't imagine hauling that quartz out on a donkey, the area it is from was very rough terrain too.
