I know the "powers" of minerals are placeboes, and that a few of them date back centuries, but there are hundreds of minerals I see online and in books which have various psychic properties. How old is are these examples? Have all these different beliefs begun just in the last few decades, and the minerals were just stones before then, or have all these species been associated with things for centuries?
And what do you think about the "powers" of minerals?

My guess is that the lore began with Native Americans and then the rest was filled in over time by Western mystics.

Well, I understand that amethyst protecting from drunkeness goes back to the ancient Greeks, but I don't know about the others.

Well Tom, maybe the first power minerals showed man was the minerals ability to knock dead something for supper. With a full belly mankind was afforded energy to contemplate greater things, like the more mystical powers of minerals, and..... what's for breakfast.

and with amethyst on board...what's to drink!

If you're really interested in the ancient "metaphysical" lore, start with Theoprastus "On Stones" and Kunz's classic "Curious Lore of Precious Stones", both are good places to start and give good coverage of what people believed before we knew better.

I think a lot of the "powers" of minerals are verifiable: When you throw a large piece of rock against someone's head - he will be injured. When someone wears a talisman made of uranium ore - he will fall ill ;-) But other so-called powers, don't know ... I have a lot of amethysts, but getting drunk always worked when I wanted it ;-)
