For those of you who have not been able to visit this museum I thought I would provide a few explanatory notes to accompany this outstanding photo coverage by Gail, which is a real tribute to her energy, talent and love of minerals. Most of the photos, especially the first ones and many of the later ones, were taken in the public exhibit gallery and the emphasis is on the minerals section although there are also some photos of the gems as well, which one encounters upon entering the gallery before the minerals. A large number of the photos were taken in what is referred to as "The Blue Room." It is here that fine specimens mostly of exhibit quality are stored, mostly in drawers but many of the larger ones behind glass. These are recognizable because they are not labeled in the formal printed way that those on public exhibit are. The bulk of the museum's collection is housed in a less secure area, all in drawers and arranged by mineral chemistry. I hope that Gail's tour of the collection included visiting this section as well and that we will soon see photos of this area.
