And a warm warm welcome to this forum from... the other side of the Alps! How is the research and the collection of minerals regulated in France?
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Thanks Riccardo ! :)
You have a lot of things on your side and the latest book about your Alps was awesome, even if I speak a "school Italian" I would I have loved to read it in English or French ^^

The regulation is horrible in France. You have the right to stay home... Everything about collecting is forbidden :(except when you go in the mountains (and if they are not a national parc). The regulation is very stupid here as we do not accept that the collectors can die when they live their passion, and for that reason all mines are secured or are going to be secured (I mean closed). Most of the land is private too... there is less and less space to prospect. Though, many localities are accessible even if theoretically forbidden...

Mines where you pay per mining that you can find everywhere (USA, SPAIN,....) do not exist here.

I am actually creating a museum in the South of France dedicated to local minerals. I'll keep you informed. DAVID (video is in French).

Here is my feeling,...
DAVID

Hi David!
Don't worry about French! I don't speak it so well, but I understand it! On the other hand... we are both Latin, therefore our languages are a little similar! And... you have all the time to improve your Italian as well!
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Hi all. I'm a new member to this forum, from Whitchurch, Hampshire, UK. I'm in my 40s now but got interested in minerals aged about 10 and started collecting to a small extent in the early 1980s. Through the mid 80s to late 90s I left the hobby but got back into it about 20 years ago after finding Gregory. Botley & Lloyds in SW London, and then the Kempton Park Rock n Gem shows.

My interests are mainly gem minerals and crystal specimens e.g. topaz, beryl, corundum, zircon, spinel etc. The latter has recently become a particular favourite because of the vivid and saturated colours that this mineral can occur in. I only have a limited budget so can only dream and drool over some of the specimens pictured here!

I look forward to participating further.

Regards,
Nick

PostPosted: Jun 01, 2018 16:05    Post subject: Presentation of new members - Introduction from Minnesota, USA

Greetings,

I currently live in Minnesota, USA. I grew up (my first 28 years) in the Republic of Panama and most of my experience with minerals was with cryptocrystalline quartz material (jasper, agate, chalcedony, etc).

When I left Panama I took about two tons of material with me. The thought was to become a lapidary and work the items into jewelry and who knows what else.

From a young age I was always fascinated with mineral specimens. My father was a civil engineer and we had two separate books on minerals and I spent hours looking through them at all the shapes and colors.

I would like to find a way to find and gather mineral specimens on my own some day.

Cheers,
Antonio

Hi Antonio,

I don't know if you are near Lake Superior, but you can purchase "The Rock Pickers Guide to the North Shore", and look for agates, thomsonite, and other minerals formed in basalt along that area of Lake Superior. A good shop to visit to find what is available for collecting from both the owner and the books he sells, is Agate City Shop in Two Harbors, run by Bob Lynch.

You can also visit the Iron Range area, and see open pit mining at Hibbing. An underground tour is available at the Soudan mine at Tower, MN. Iron World has a large museum showing some of the local minerals and the history of iron mining in the region.

I hope this information is helpful for you,

Susan Robinson

My name is Jannie Groenewald, a conservation biologist from the Tip of Africa. I have been collecting minerals and rocks from a young age and got a nice collection of mostly southern African rocks. Lots of them I cannot identify and I hope this forum can help.
