|
|
Hello,
Is there someone here from Portugal or who is experienced with Portuguese minerals?
Could you please tell me from your experience which are the representative Portuguese minerals, worth collecting? I ask because I’m going to go to Portugal this month and I will like to get some insight. I’m always trying to prepare myself a little bit when travelling abroad, who knows?
Any advice regarding places to visit in Portugal for a mineral collector?
From what I know Portugal is a rich country from the mineralogical point of view with a complex geology albeit it’s relative small size. I know about the fluorapatite, wolframite and arsenopyrite from Panasqueira mine.
Thank you in advance! |

Some of the largest beryl XX in Europe can be found there. I believe the quarry is an active one just East of Porto. You'd need permission. |

Panasqueira as you said is the most known locality:minerals are fantastic: apatite, siderite, quartz, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, Ferberite and so on;
go to mindat to know more https://www.mindat.org/loc-2591.html |

To look more broadly at Portuguese minerals, go to the mindat page for that country:
https://www.mindat.org/loc-14425.html
There you will find some basic info on the country, a list of all the minerals found there (that are in the mindat database), and a zoomable map showing the distribution of mineral localities. |
