A friend found this on their property near Silver City New Mexico. It's ~12" long, 13" high and 12" deep.
She has found many copper containing smaller rocks with azurite, malachite, chrysacola, etcv... as well as different types of quartz, but this is the first time I've seen something with seemingly so many different minerals all combined in one rock and it's such a large specimen too.
I feel as though there are again numerous copper containing minerals present as well as iron and I'm wondering if the deeper dark red vein could be cinnabar?
I really know very little about rocks, minerals and gemstones and I suggested she take it to the nearby University geology department for identification but thought I would share it here in the hopes that perhaps someone(s) could help her out as well.

I would go with your original instinct of taking it to the local geology department.
I would say that from this picture and zero other information there is no chance that anybody on this forum is going to give you an answer over and above what you already appear to know about the presence of copper mineralogy. It is, on the other hand, likely that somebody who can get it in hand would be a lot more helpful (you may also look out for a local mineral collectors club)

Most likely hematite, possible cuprite but not cinnabar.
