My cousin is taking me for a few days on a mini-vacation to Pittsburgh. Researching, I came across this collection in their Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
Anybody have any tips or reviews on it? What should I look for or keep in mind?

i have volunteered for the Carnegie Museum for many years and am quite familiar with the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems. If you're in town, by all means tour the Hall - the systematic display is excellent and then you come to Masterpiece Gallery - WOW!. And if you're into gems the Wurtz portion is wonderful - and save some time to tour the dinosaur hall also.
Try to contact Deb Wilson and Travis Olds - they may be available to tour you around. Deb is the collection manager and Travis is the curator.

It is an excellent mineral museum. Enjoy it. But check before you go to make sure they are open!

We're going in mid-May. My cousin is handling all the details.

They may require vaccination proof before allowing a tour and number of people may be restricted. It's only to your benefit to contact them yourself ahead of time, Inquiring about tours and your area of interest, sometimes curators will make an extra effort for a booking appointment to show you specimens in the back that are not on display, You do realize what's on display is maybe 20% of what they have. If lucky, you might get a chance to see things nobody else gets to see. Just be upfront and honest and reach out to them yourself. Worst case you get the same experience everyone else does.

These are the stones I got from the museum souvenir shop. What minerals would these polished rocks be? Are they different species or a porous one that can be dyed? Or something else?

Hi to everybody!
These polished stones are by the biggest majority quartz. The brilliant-coloured ones (blue, pink...) are artificially enhanced by colouring. But... I'm afraid Jordi is not so enthusiast to talk about polished stones!
