No, there is no rutile in that showcase. I understand you are referring to a group of three Australian tourmalines. If not, please let me know.

For more details, photos of these specimens are posted at https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=5674#5674 , https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=6262#6262 and https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=6543#6543

I'm glad you like the pictures.

Thank you!

Thanks Carles! I went to the url you provided and was able to take a good close look at piece 6349M. What a beauty it is indeed!!! You can see right through the crystal to the matrix below. Looks like the crystal has been deposited on a matrix of carbonate (limestone or dolomite) breccia. It is actually possible to study the underlying matrix (spacing and size of the fragments, things like that) through the crystal itself. Wow!

The piece I had in mind is similar, on a single piece of similar/same matrix, but without the breccia (or whatever) fragments. I believe it was a slightly darker colour as well, darker grey, not quite black.

Probably similar vintage though.

Thanks for the reply, and the opportunity to look at your stuff.

Oh, and congratulations on your freebie display cabinets. Woo Hoo!!!

Later,

Ed

Hi Ed!

I think the gypsum matrix is neither limestone nor dolostone. It might be a complex material that in my Catalan mother tongue is known as 'marga', in English 'marl' or 'marlstone', and is "a calcium carbonate or lime-rich mud or mudstone which contains variable amounts of clays and aragonite" (according to the English Wikipedia). Most sources, however, refer to 'calcite' or 'limestone' instead of aragonite.

Such specimen as a whole seems rather good, but by making a search on the net you can find many others, also from Naica, that are much better ( for the casual reader: we are talking about this: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=4684#4684 )

Hi Carles

Very nice specimens you add from day to day. Especially the last one ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=18366#18366 ) is a phantastic piece. Can you shoot me a private message how much a piece like this is. I want to look for something like that in Munich and want to know what prices (at least a range) are on pieces like this.
Thanks.

Pyrite, quartz, calcite?

Group of pyrite crystals on quartz. Overall size: 71 mm x 52 mm. Main pyrite crystal: 31 mm wide, 29 mm on edge. Weight: 149 g. The crack that is visible in the photos seems to be natural, not man made, likely caused by very old tectonic movements. Among the quartz there are other crystals, colorless and transparent, with rhombohedral habit, that might be calcite or dolomite.

The crystallography of this specimen is very interesting. The main crystal is basically an octahedron {111} but also shows pyritohedron {210} and rhombododecahedron {110} faces. Although octahedrons and pyritohedrons are quite usual in pyrite crystals, rhombododecahedrons are really rare. Please see more details about the habit in one of the photos below.

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Huánuco Department, Peru.

Pay attention to the octahedron {111}, pyritohedron {210} and the uncommon (in pyrite) rhombododecahedron {110} faces. Anyone interested to learn what the Miller indices are can get a primer from the Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_index

Hi Carles, once again all of your specimens proof that you have a good taste concerning fine minerals. Very nice, especially the Erongo aquamarine! ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=18366#18366 )
