Carles, what is wrong with calling it gypsum? You can tell that I have a serious dislike for the term selenite, please forgive my pedantry, at least according to Alfredo. Love your taste in specimens, they are all first class.

PostPosted: Apr 20, 2009 19:43    Post subject: Re: Collection of Carles Millan

Carles, I like this specimen (the gypsum). Did it by any chance come from the Miguel Romero Collection? I travelled through northern Mexico acquiring specimens for Miguel, and this one looks a lot like one I found in Santa Eulalia and brought back to Tehuacan for him.

There are several kinds of gypsum, although many of the terms are more rock hound than scientific. These include Alabaster, Selenite (and "Hour-Glass selenite, I've heard them use that one), and Satin Spar, and Ram's Horn and even "Fishtail" (for the twinned ones). But they're all gypsum. To make the distinction is not really necessary, except perhaps if you were putting together a display of specimens to illustrate the various ores of gypsum. Then you would probably want to break things out. I like to call my helictitic gypsum "Rams Horn". The passers-by seem to get a kick out of the term. It's descriptive, too.

And yes, you do have a very good eye. And you take great photographs of your minerals as well. I hope to be able to be able to take such good photos of my stuff as time goes by.

Keep 'em coming, keep up the good work, and thanks for the help with the site protocols earlier.

'sta luego,

Ed

To John S. White:

I have nothing at all against the name gypsum. I called it selenite because of my ignorance. I've just looked it up in the IMA list and have seen that gypsum is the official name. So I amended my posting and, as you can see above, my specimen is now called gypsum (except the image file names, that are more difficult to change).

Many thanks for your comments about my collection. I really appreciate them.

To Ed Huskinson:

>Did it by any chance [the gypsum] come from the Miguel Romero Collection?

No relation with that excellent collection. The Miguel Romero specimens were much, much better than mine.

>But they're all gypsum.

As you will see above, I edited the name and wrote 'gypsum' instead of 'selenite'. You all were right.

Improving your photos is not as difficult as it seems. It takes a good light source and a good program to edit the pictures. The camera is not as important as people think. In fact, mine is a $99 camera.

Many thanks for your other comments as well.

Scheelite, albite. muscovite

Scheelite single crystal on a matrix with albite and muscovite. Overall size: 105 mm x 80 mm. Scheelite crystal size: 29 mm across. Weight: 276 g. Field collected in year 2000.

Xuebaoding, Huya, Pingwu, Mianyang, Sichuan, China.

Description from the vendor: "While scheelite is now quite common on the market after the 'China explosion' not many specimens are associated with white albite, as this one is. The contrast is spectacular: on a bed of small gemmy mica crystals are white and brilliant upright albite crystals, and just at the center of everything is the perfect, colorful, euhedral scheelite crystal. So this all makes a great specimen for all collectors of quality material. So if you already have a scheelite, this different one could complete a nice suite."
