Dear all,
I used to visit all nearby mineral shows, no matter how small. Last Sunday I've visited a small show in Schwalmtal, Germany, just 30 km from my home. There were around 10 vendors, some of them were also present at the other local shows (Erkelenz, Huckelhoven), and they usually have the same specimens which I've already seen in these other shows. I never expect to find high end specimens, and there's not much money circulating in these shows, most visitors don't spend any money at all or have a budget of around 20 euro. The interesting vendors are the typical 1-time vendors who want to sell inherited specimens, attic finds, or who want to decrease the size of a collection. You always have to be early, preferable before opening, otherwise possible interesting specimens are gone, and of course some vendors already made the rounds of their peers before opening hours.
There was an old lady, who had some 20 carboard boxes filled with all sorts of minerals, lots of quartz specimens but also other stuff (mainly nothing special or damaged). Nothing was labelled, so I asked her about the locality of some of the specimens, but she answered that she didn't know, it was her husband's hobby. I asked her about the prices and she said "I don't know, how much do you want to give?" I said "the vendor determines the price, not me".
One of the few specimens I bought is a specimen of red quartz sitting on brownish porous rock. I assume it originates from Morocco, I especially like it because of the intense red color obviously caused by hematite microcrystal inclusions. Usually red quartz is surface coated with hematite.
The question that I have is about the locality. Does anybody recognize the combination of this quartz and rock combination and trace it to a specific location?
