When I started this collection more than 20 years ago in Colombia, I thought emeralds would quickly bore me. 20 years later, here I am, still looking for special specimens or oddities.
And the odds are that, in the 20 years to come (and if everything goes smoothly) I will still be suffering from that terrible green fever.

It's been a while...
Group of two crystals in parallel growth plus a couple of isolated crystals on a brecciated matrix dominated by large calcite rhombs.

Group of intergrown beryl crystals on a metamorphic schist.
Afghan emeralds can be just as good as their Colombian counterparts.
You just need to be able to find some.
Without knowing the Panjsher district (Khenj, Paryan, Bazarak) and even less the mine where this specimen comes from, I have (reluctantly) selected the only Panjsher locality available in the list.
Maybe a good idea would be to create a "Panjsher Province" entry in the Afghanistan locality list.

And your photo proves this. What a wonderful emerald specimen, incredible colour, good contrast and perfect aesthetics overall. In my opinion, though not completely gemmy, as good as an emerald specimen can get!

Thanks for your appreciation Philippe and Tobi!
Colombian and Panjshir emeralds share many similarities (origin of the mineralizing fluids, fluid inclusions, tectonic-metamorphic-related type of deposit).
It's no surprise that they also share the same visual aesthetic.

A complete doubly terminated trapiche crystal from Muzo.
Complete trapiche pattern parallel to the c-axis is observed in this crystal, which is fairly uncommon.

Magnifiques photos Gérard, félicitations pour cette superbe collection
Plenty of wonderful masterpieces in all the pages but this trapiche crystal is really something I have never seen before. Generally, they are deeply embed in the shist matrix, with no visible faces. From what I see, the faces are natural here (unpolished), right?

By the way, this trapiche patern remind me of a phenomenon we sometimes observe in red beryl (hourglass patern) but I think it is much more of a color zoning rather than a trapiche patern for these ones.

This trapiche crystal is certainly an oddity.
Emerald trapiche are not that uncommon in Colombia but as you said, they usually come embedded in their carbonaceous matrix (and more often sliced and polished, but that’s a different story).
Complete trapiche crystals are seldom seen, and when they are, the crystals are coated with carbonaceous material which makes them opaque and misshapen.
This crystal has been closely examined and is definitely unpolished.
As you have probably already found, there are a couple of good references on the formation of trapiche emeralds which have been published over the recent years.
I have never heard about trapiche-like red beryl. Do you maybe have a reference?

This piece is the last entered in my collection.
Well balanced specimens like this one are usually not difficult to photograph.
The color of the emerald is better in person.
It passed successfully the 'dim light test': the crystal still glows in a poor lighting environment.
Hope to post more in the near future.
