I have here a couple of 3-4 cm "citrines" that I got when I was a child. The darker one was from a science store for kids in my local mall. The lighter one is from the Smithsonian Museum gift shop. Both were purchased around 1993/1994.
The first one looks way too deep in color to be natural. The second one I'm not so sure of. Is a white matrix really a tell-tale sign that they've been enhanced? Is citrine rare enough that I should assume these are enhanced?

All are heated amethysts.
Natural citrines are paler and in general have other shapes. And over all, are rares.

Thanks. I suspected this, but just wanted confirmation. So, the citrine cathedrals and vugs from South America are also heated amethysts?

I'm afraid all of them are heated. It's the way they have to sell poor-quality amethyst pieces. Pay attention to colour -as Lluis has pointed- and the geode shape. The topic has been widely explained on the spanish message board.

I agree too. Natural citrine is more pale yellow. If your specimens looked like this one I would guess it is citrine : https://www.mindat.org/photo-239089.html
