Mike, this is a Blue Cap from California that combines the legendary beauty of these classic elbaites with an uncommon form.
Any idea why this one grew so extremely flat and short-prismatic? It looks like the Cap was separated from a "normal" long-prismatic crystal during growth and then re-crystallized as such a thick elbaite. I'm not good at crystallography, I only know that tourmalines rather tend to grow long-prismatic, so I got curious why this one developed as such a chubby beauty :-)
However, this tourmaline is both beautiful AND unique!

Thanks Tobi! I would think that you are correct in assuming that the cap separated and recrystallized as a thick wafer form.
