I don't know if this is the right place but I looked at the index and it seemed like it was. Just wanted to ask about old collections that I acquire. There are some specimens that I received from old collections that are in perky's or micros. Some of these specimens were collected in the 70's and the perkys are broken or just in bad condition. What do collectors normally do if they wanted to "refresh" or replace the perky or micromount? Don't want to lose the integrity of the collection or the provenance attached to the perky. What do you do in these instances? Just looking for some advice. I'm grateful for your reply. |

Roberto, I collect mostly thumbnails along with some micro-mounts. Most of the thumbnails are stored and displayed in "perky" boxes. Some I have had for 50 years or more. Some went thru a flood when a torrential rainfall caused the water drainage system in my small town to back up and they were damaged. I had to remove the specimens, clean them, sometimes remount them and occasionally put them in new boxes. Damage occurs over the years; it is inevitable in some cases. If the labels are damaged you will have to make new ones, if you can make out the information. It will help to keep a separate file somewhere safe. It will be a lot of work to essentially start over. Wishing you well! Marv |

Sure, you want to keep the integrity of the collection and the provenance of the specimens. But some kind of damage may harm the minerals. And I would prefer old specimens with new boxes instead of old specimens that get damaged. In my opinion (I'm not specialized in old collections but I also have some pieces from old collections) the mineral specimen itself is the most important part of a "mineral oldtimer", together with the label(s). Things like boxes or glue are of course also part of the history but I think if they are a danger to the mineral, you should exchange them for new ones. Maybe you can keep them somewhere.

Thank you Marvin. I just wanted to know how to properly handle and I agree, changing it out with newer boxes and maintain old labels for sure. Just wanted to check in on what others thought. Thank you for replying.
