PostPosted: Apr 05, 2025 08:18    Post subject: An interesting 10 inch multi mineral Blackdene plate

Had an interesting morning looking over a decent sized plate from The Blackdene Mine in Ireshopburn Weardale

it is predominantly Quartz and fluorite

But I can see a nice galena crystal with an off-white scattering of an unknown crystal next to it. I have also spotted a few blades of baryte.

I would like to know what the off-white cream mineral is

It could be calcite - see if it produces bubbles when you put vinegar on it

James is right. The crystal habit appears to be that of calcite.

If the specimen is actually from Blackdene, I would be very surprised if there is any baryte present. The combination of baryte and fluorite is only seen in a few mines along the periphery of the fluorite zone in the North Pennines Orefield, and I have never seen any from the mines in Weardale.

100% certain about provenance of location.

Identification of blade like material as Baryte is suspect and probably incorrect.

The off white crystal has some reaction to acid so concur as most likely Calcite

Under UV only the Fluorite reacts.

Many thanks for all the Help
