I came across this site when a friend had a portfolio of her jewelry designs published.
For people with remarkable collections that would like a physical catalog of their specimens this might be an interesting site - not saying it is cheap - but color printing in a small run is always expensive.

what a coincidence
I was just leafing through a book on self publication yesterday... and it referred to both sites but set Blurb above Lulu... if I recall correctly, Lulu is suited more toward black and white, or text only publications whereas Blurb can handle colour and photography.

I use Shutterfly for mineral books of our pieces as gifts to Jim and our children. And I usually make a calendar for friends each year but never managed to do so this Christmas. I do about 40 pages and a great cover and back cover for about $88.00 each. Of course each page has both sides done, so that covers quite a few minerals when you put 3 or 4 on a page occasionally. |

Steve has published many beautifully photographed "magazines" using Lulu -- for example, the "Australian & New Zealand Mineral Collector Magazine" is full of color photos and text, and the price in the USA is about $12. |

I have always wanted to do a calendar Gail - that is why I was researching these sites...is Shutterfly fairly reasonable?
Steve - I know LuLu but wasn't aware of their ability to create in Full Color....will have to check into that one again.

I'm pretty happy with Lulu. I will be publishing Issue #10 of my magazine in about 6 or 8 weeks. I have published a book on the minerals of the Kara mine in Tasmania, and also published a few things 'for myself' - that is, things that I wanted in print form but are not for general release.
Lulu also does calendars, although I didn't publish one this year (ran out of time coz of building the house!).

Yes I have seen similar products and websites and there is also a product where you can make them at home. The one I saw at target was limited to a certain amount of pages and the one you do yourself you have to make the pages and then bind them but this one is cool, they do it for you and you can have up to 400 pages. This is so awesome and I never thought about doing one for something like this. Usually it seems people do it for a photo album but this is cool I will definitely look into this more, thanks a lot for the link. :) _________________ Daniel |
