Pierre, thank you for your kind words; I must say that I have been very impressed with your specimens - especially the quartzes - and your postings of your collecting trips in the mountains of South Africa. Your photo's provided the inspiration for me to start again with my collection thread after a long delay !
Cheers, Mike : ) |
Hi Mike, you put a smile om my dial this morning:-) Thank you! Please keep posting.

Good morning Pierre and thanks again.
I've got a few more fairly dull minerals to show, and I know my photo's are rather basic but I want to do these things in approximately alphabetical order. It makes it easier to remember where I am with the list - but don't worry - I'm saving the best until last !

Some specimens from a locality a bit closer to the Cuillin - the biggest mountains on Skye reaching almost 1000m high. They are the eroded remnant of a basic/ultrabasic pluton which was emplaced in the final stages of the volcanism event (lasting about 2 million years) that produced the basaltic lava flows which began about 58my ago in the Tertiary period. Being only a few kilometres from the 'gabbro' (mostly) pluton the range of zeolite and associated mineralisation appears to be limited. In fact the only things worth collecting are prehnite, some very small amounts of copper and microscopic secondaries, and quartz.
Description: |
Prehnite Sgurr nan Cearcall, nr Glen Brittle, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK 6cm x 4cm x 5cm deep 'Stalactitic' formation of white prehnite on very hard basalt. The prehnite has most likely replaced some thin crystals of another, probably zeolitic mineral like laumontite. Self-collected 1997 |

Hi Mike. Interesting quartz specimens. When I first saw your Coastline photos, I thought that a rubber boat would be a good option, but it appears that it is about as rugged as the Cape coastline and not suitable for a boat approach. Have you got any photos of crystals as found?

Hi Pierre, I would say that 99% of the time the weather or the state of the sea (swell) would preclude an attempt with a rubber boat. I've been showing pictures of the coastline mostly in very good weather because, well, it looks nicer. I guess it could be done in flat calm conditions but these are rare, and a swell can begin without warning becoming 1m high within an hour, even if the wind is light, which makes quite powerful waves against the rocky shoreline.
I don't have that many photo's of crystals as found, but I'll post a few after I've dealt with these thomsonites...
Regards, Mike

Here are some photo's of minerals in-situ (in boulders) and being extracted.

Apophyllite + Quartz Sgurr nam Boc, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK Vug is approx. 15cm x 10cm Pinacoidal terminated apophyllite crystals to approx. 13mm sprinkled on a layer of blueish quartz. A few small stilbite crystals can also be seen. This material is identical to specimens I have seen in the Heddle Collection in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. I have never bothered to extract it as it is in the side of a very large boulder consisting of extremely hard basalt. Not collected 2006. Still there 2013. |

Thank you Pierre, I really should be more ready to photograph my finds as found ! I shall endeavour to do so from now on.
There are a lot of different zeolite minerals listed world-wide (41 according to Rudy W. Tschernich in his excellent book 'Zeolites of the World', 1992). There may be more species discovered or accredited since then. There are many more 'zeolitic' minerals - closely related but not 'pure' zeolites; and minerals which often occur with zeolites typically in gas cavities in basalt lavas e.g. apophyllite.
On the Isle of Skye there are perhaps half the number of zeolites found world-wide, and I've shown fourteen different types, with a few additions of other minerals. I'm reaching the end of this collection thread and the last zeolite mineral on the list is probably the most spectacular in terms of size, variety of habit, and beauty - I hope you will agree - STILBITE.
Description: |
Stilbite + 'Mesolite' 'Glen Caladale', Loch Eynort, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK 10cm across x 7cm high x 3cm deep Three large stilbite crystals in a 'wheatsheaf' habit perched on a mound of basalt matrix covered with 'mesolite' crystals. The stilbite crystal on the right is 52mm long. This is the best specimen, found in a large pipe cavity in a very large boulder on my first visit to this little-known locality. The 'mesolite' is rather dirty but I decided to leave it so as it shows off the stilbite nicely ! Self-collected 1996 |

You must own one of the best collections of minerals from Isle of Skye. Plenty of work done. And I say so after carefully browsing Mindat.

Thanks once again for the joyride Mike. I hope that time has healed the wounds and you have forgiven your son (SKYE MINERALS 021.jpg in https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=31806#31806 ) :-) :-)

Thanks Ru, yes the otter was a lucky find - I spotted it just as I passed by a large boulder, about 4m away from me ! At first I thought it was injured; it was writhing about on the smooth rocks, but it was just drying it's fur after being in the sea. After 10 minutes of this it lay back and did some sunbathing ! I snuck away and left him to it - made my day. I've seen a few otters on Skye but never managed to get a photo until this happened.
Pierre - glad you enjoyed the 'joyride', and yes I have forgiven my son - it happened about 16 years ago - and rest assured I didn't retaliate in any way, I just cringed inwardly and maybe let out a little whine !
When I've spent some time improving my photographic technique, I'm going to start showing some smoky quartzes I've been collecting ;-)
