I have always understood that here are no mines at Santa Clara del Cobre (I can recall none but I have not been there for 40 years), I wonder where the copper specimens comes from.

The specimen is from Dennis Beals and his label indicates that the mine is near Santa Clara del Cobre.

Santa Clara del Cobre was the ore processing centre (smelter)
This article lists where the mines were (see Chapter 4)
https://revistas.um.es/navegamerica/article/view/586071/348041
(link normalized by FMF)
Google translate with a few corrections:
Most of the copper mines in operation were in two jurisdictions: in Zitácuaro with the headquarters in Maravatío, and in Inguarán and its surroundings with the headquarters in Tancítaro or Ario. There were also some mines scattered in Uruapan
plus
“In the district of this bishopric there are several copper mines, which I understand will exceed the number of twenty, although I certainly do not guarantee it, but I know that they are all up to date and there is more copious abundance that can be made because the miners apply themselves well to taking care of each one of his own for which he has his runners and with them they try and arrange the purchase of this metal others who call the sheet copper tasters, who send to Mexico everything they buy from the runners making a profit of one hundred percent. One hundred because buying here for nine or ten pesos per quintal they sell it in that city for eighteen and twenty pesos.”
So it is possibly from near Maravatío, Tancítaro/Ario or Urapan and was then acquired in Santa Clara del Cobre where the smelter was. I guess they are all 'near' Santa Clara del Cobre (I visited them all, back in the 1970s)
I assume we will never know the exact locality, except 'Michoacan, Mexico', but we know they are not from close to Santa Clara del Cobre itself

A bit more information on copper mining in Michoacan:
http://www.investigacionesgeograficas.unam.mx/index.php/rig/article/download/59087/52074
(link normalized by FMF)
Figure 2 shows how widespread copper mining was in the area that is now Michoacan and the text says
"In neighboring jurisdictions, such as Charo, Maravatio, Tlaipujahua, Jasso and Zamora, there was also a mastery of copper mining"

The smoky quartz with hints of amethyst from Crystal Park in Montana is a real gem! It's a beautiful combination of colors in a stunning piece. Thanks for sharing this image!
