Hello,
My name is ryan and im from kent, UK. was looking through the interwebs and found this site.
I am a small time collector of common mineral specimens. I have about 20 or 30 all together medium and small pieces.
My first question, and one i expect you get all the time is how would i go about getting a valuation on some of my pieces as some i have in duplicate and due to downsizing have no where to display them.
Also how would i go about identifying some of the minerals in my mixed pieces IE im told one of my specimens has "childrenite" but im not sure (There are a few very small brown crystals)
But anyways,
I hope i will enjoy my time here,

Hi Ryan,
Welcome.
As to the question on valuation, it takes lots of experience looking at minerals and prices. The internet is a pretty good source for this information, with the caveat that some websites are more reasonable than others. Google the specimen's dominant mineral and locality, and see if you can find similar material. Adjust the value of yours depending on how it compares to what you find. Sometimes its relatively easy, and other times requires an educated guess.
As for getting an idea of what minerals are present on a specimen, a good first starting place in mindat.org which does a pretty good job listing the minerals and providing photos. As it is user supported, the lists are not always complete and photos aren't available for all combinations, but it will get you started.

Hi Ryan, welcome to FMF!
As Bob says Mindat is a good first starting. For valuation, sorry but this is a non commercial site, so we can't help you on that way. On the other hand I'm sure that FMF's surfers we will be happy helping you to identify some of your specimens if you publish here photos of them. Before to do it please read the post: "Mineral identification / basic rules" -> https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=124 Thank you.

Hello Ryan
I too am from the Ashford area :)
As mentioned 'mindat' is a good source for photos, it also has a forum, you should look at the 'money grubbers' section it may help to post there for an idea of value.
