I know this sounds like a strange thing, but I've got a sheet of specular hematite that my wife thinks would make a great pot holder on the dining room table. It's a beautiful piece, and the table will definitely give it a good place to sparkle and I'm sure it will start some interesting conversations. It's already coated on one side to protect against erosion, but I don't know what was used. It's glossy. The bottom is unsealed.

I'm looking for information on what I need to do to coat it to maintain that glossy appearance and protect it from high heat, as well as seal the bottom so I can affix rubber feet to it. I'll also need to know what to use for doing that.

You may want to contact either Red Metal Minerals in Ontonagon, Michigan or Keweenaw Gem and Gift in Houghton, Michigan, for the sealer they use on the specular hematite. Both of these businesses supply the hematite to tourists in our area. The hematite is from the Champion mine, Champion, Michigan.
