That prehnite is a beauty Mike, and a really nice image. So little comes out of that location. That may have been found in the past couple years, I managed to collect a few almost identical to yours. Nice to see a fine specimen, from my backyard, presented the way you have done so. Thanks.

Thanks Vic. Having grown up in Massachusetts, I collected at many localities throughout the state, but I never managed to get in to the Lane Quarry while we lived there.

Speaking of the Lane Quarry, I found a reference to it in a Rock and Gem article by Bob Jones.

"The best-known Massachusetts quarry is the Lane Quarry in Westfield. Decades ago, it was accessible and produced wonderful datolites reaching three inches in diameter, some of the largest ever found in this country. The Lane Quarry is also well known for babingtonite, a black mineral that frequently occurs as microscopic to 1-inch crystals in some basalt quarries. It has lately been found in India associated with zeolites.

Unfortunately, Westfield has been off limits for decades. Controls there have been so tight that even when I asked the President of Lane Construction Company over for dinner one night, I was refused admission! (Jones, 2003, p. 76)"

Well got to give credit to Bob for trying, but it makes for a good story. I agree with Vic, this is an outstanding prehnite.

Jones, B., 2007, The Frugal Collector: The Zeolites, Part II: Natrolite, Mesolite, Scolecite and More, Rock and Gem, v. 37 (7), p. 72-74, 76-78.

Thanks Jamison. I enjoyed reading about Bob Jones' experiences attempting to gain access. Babingtonites from this locality are well-known and I am lucky to have a nice one from there. The 3 inch datolites, however, have eluded me thus far :>)

I knew you wouldn't mind Tobi ... I'll have a few new ones to post later in the week. However, just in case some people get tired of looking at heavy gray minerals, today's offering is fluorite.

Hi Michael. The chalcedony (Scolecite 0219.jpg); is it not possibly hyalite opal?
