To Tobi, Nunzio and Don:
I'm very glad you like it. Thanks for your comments! It looks like the long hours spent on taking and processing such a large number of photographs were worth it. And it was even a little fun.

I agree, the first photo is the better one. I know about the struggle of photographing transparent crystals :-( But one who views the photos CAN see that they are transparent, hope you are relieved to hear this.

Hübnerite, quartz
Association of parallel hübnerite crystals with colorless quartz. Deep red color when backlit (indicating a predominance of manganese on iron in the hübnerite-ferberite series). Overall size: 108mm x 67mm. Main hübnerite crystal: 63mm tall, 26mm wide. Main quartz crystal: 72mm tall, 21mm wide. Weight: 351g.
Huayllapon Mine, Pasto Bueno, Pampas District, Pallasca Province, Ancash Department, Peru.

A very fine spray of hübnerite in an impressive (!) size, really a great specimen. I know your taste in aesthetic minerals and your love for Peruvian specimens, and I think this specimen is the logical consequence of these two factors :-)

Hi Carles. I have a few similar, very clear, quartz specimens. I find these the hardest to photograph and then they hardly ever look close to the real thing:-(

Pierre,
I guess the professional photographers don't have many problems, if any. But for us, simply amateurs, it's a different story. We must never forget that what our eyes see is not the same as the camera does. It's radically different. They are an incredible job made by Nature, which took billions of years to complete, while any camera, no matter the money you paid for, still stays a lot below.

I forgot. Sorry!
The human visible spectrum includes wavelengths from about 390 nm to 700 nm. We cannot see light from below and above such range (which would be UV and IR light respectively). Other animal species can see slightly different wavelengths. But the range that the cameras see must be even more different. Not to mention the big difference of resolutions. So it's no surprise that the photos we get don't match the images we directly see.
