|
|
Aegirine, orthoclase, zircon
Group of black color aegirine crystals with acute edges, displaying very lustrous almost mirror-like faces and unusual (in this locality) pyramidal terminations with a sharp pointed habit. Several crystals of colorless orthoclase accompany them on the base and a small zircon crystal can be seen on the back side. Overall size: 108mm x 51mm. Main aegirine crystal: 12mm wide, 92mm tall. Weight: 124g.
Mount Malosa, Zomba District, Malawi.

Quartz, epidote
Group of purple to colorless transparent quartz crystals on a matrix covered by contrasting small acicular green epidote. Overall size: 111mm x 91mm. Widest crystal: 14mm. Tallest crystal: 53mm. Weight: 297g.
Since I stand against the use of varieties I much prefer not to name it amethyst. Simply quartz.
Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico.

It took 67 shots of this specimen to get just one decent photo. When I was about to give up, I thought to try with a smartphone. And got it! |

To Tobi, Nunzio and Don:
I'm very glad you like it. Thanks for your comments! It looks like the long hours spent on taking and processing such a large number of photographs were worth it. And it was even a little fun.
