PostPosted: Jul 18, 2015 07:14    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Muzo with acicular ??? (#547)

Unusual specimen from Muzo.
Acicular crystal habit is not common at all in the 2 Colombian emerald districts.
Could be aragonite or calcite... or something else?
In the last close-up image, the brownish elongated crystal is very likely parisite.
Host rock is black shale.

PostPosted: Jul 18, 2015 12:24    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Dioptase (#9100)

For those who are sick and tired of seeing emeralds in this thread, here is a nice break (Well, sort of, it's still green!)
I just found out that rendering dioptase-green is even more difficult than emerald-green.
This specimen was purchased by my father in Brazzaville back in the early 70's.
I doesn't seem to be glued but I might be wrong.
As per the locality, I have no idea where it comes from, so your comments and suggestions are welcomed. I labeled it as from "Republic of the Congo" but it could as well be from the ex-Zaire.

It looks like Calcite-Aragonite. Is very easy to check it, try if it fizz in dilute HCl or if it dissolves inside vinegar (after 24 hours)

Well, it seems glued. Very easy to check it, just submerge the specimen in Acetone.during 1-2 hours

And if it is glued then I will lose the only "rock" my father left me :-(
(unless I glue everything back together of course).
I feel am engaged in a risky hobby more than ever.

The emerald - colorless transparent quartz association is more commonly found in Peñas Blancas than in Muzo.
White calcite is also visible on the opposite side of the emerald aggregate.
Host rock is black shale.

Hi Gerard. The orientation and irregularity of the dioptase crystals do look a bit unusual. You have a choice: dip it as Jordi suggested, or keep it with a question mark.

Thanks for your remarks Pierre.
Should it be a glued specimen, it's a bit too late to tell my dad, from whom I inherited this vivid green... artistic object.
Will just keep it with a question mark along with my "too nice to be true" group of specimens.
