Here is another specimen that I recently acquired.
It was in the vendors Baryte showcase, but he didn't know the location.
Is there anybody who recognizes specimen like this one?
Size; 18 cm left to right.

Just a guess, but it could be from Romania, the little black inclusions are maybe a sulfide mineral ...

Have you tested if by chance to see if it fizzes with acid?

MATHIAS,

That is a very nice large piece. Too bad it did not come with a more complete label......

Looking thru the many, many barytes from Romania pictured on Mindat, I see a couple from Cavnic (sp?) that have calcites atop baryte with tiny sulfides sprinkled about. These examples look like yours so Romania is a good bet.

I suggest you scroll thru the Mindat photos of Romanian barytes to see for yourself. bOB

Hi Mathias,

looks like small crystals of gypsum on typical brown Calcite (Not barite). Try the acid test. There are several locations possible, Lavrion is one of them. Oberzeiring might also be possible.

Cheers
Stefan

Some time passed but on e-rocks I saw a similar specimen being sold.
It isn''t Barite at all.

It is Calcite with Gypsum.
Oberzeiring, Pöls valley, Niedere Tauern, Styria, Austria

Mysterie solved…..
Thanks

Mathias
