PostPosted: Oct 20, 2019 06:14    Post subject: Pyrrhotite Herja?

Dear mineral friends,

I have a specimen in my collection, labeled as follows:

Pyrrhotite, Herja Mine Romania.
Mined 08/1967, R. Ionescu

I can't find any similar looking pyrrhotite specimens from this location.
Is anybody familiar with pyrrhotite? Who is R. Ionescu?
I know it is a difficult one since all pyrrhotite looks alike, more or less.
The specimen has no other minerals on it.

7 cm * 4 cm.

Thanks,
Mathias

May be pyrite.

Check with a magnet. Pyrrhotite is magnetic, Pyrite is not.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
It's pyrite. We see typical truncations. The specimen also has a compact texture.
Roger.

Yep, Pyrite,
I venture the guess of Huanzala Mine in Peru for the locality. I have a couple of pieces showing a similar habit.

Greetings to all!

Mathias,

I can say that this pyrite specimen is not typical for Romania.

This is a very precise dating for those blurred times, here, in the Eastern European mining industry. At that time it was not common for a private person to collect directly from the mine. Everything was controlled by the communist regime. There were several former officials from the Geology Department of the University of Bucharest who had an initiative in this regard. Totally isolated cases, we cannot say that there were private collectors.
At this point I do not remember the name mentioned by any known surname.
