PostPosted: Feb 04, 2020 15:31    Post subject: Collecting and imagining

Hello.

I share some of my specimens that show some resemblance to...
I'd like other forum members to show here their "nicknamed" minerals.

Greetings,
Sante

LOL...it takes all kinds. Until now, most of the "named" specimens I've seen seem to be for marketing purposes...

Hi, Bob.
Thank you for your comment, but I don't understand (perhaps because of my scarce knowledge of english).
The "named" minerals for marketing purposes are on a much higher level.
Do you mean that for common specimens, like mine, this practice is too pretentious?
Greetings.

Not at all. I thought your post was amusing (in fact, I thought you were being ironic), and I think the sellers of many of the really expensive specimens with names are being pretentious. Sorry if either of us misunderstood.

There was a display at Tucson some years back that had what looked like a dinner table with all sorts of mineral specimens (and rocks i think) that looked like a set table full of food. It included specimens that looked like bread and cheese and fruits. Can anyone remember which show that was?

Hi, Bob.
Thanks for the clarification. :-)

Hi, Matt.
It would be very nice, at least for me, to see photos of that display...

I don't remember which show it was but I think GAIL can help: I think that these special look-alike specimens were from her and Jim's collection, I remember a copper specimen that looked like a crab and a calcite that looked like a sliced cheese ...

Hi, Tobi.
Thank you very much for your appreciated suggestion.
I'll try to look for among the several Gail's Tucson reports.
Cheers.

Muchas gracias, José Luis.
As you probably already know, the self-collected "strawberry" is one of many Tuscan cinnabars which I've posted on Spanish Forum.
Warm greetings.

Hello Sante,

On May 2, 2013, I posted some pictures of a dinner table set like a banquet with rocks and minerals as the "food."

It is posted under Re: Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society on the FMF. You may have to search under "Search for a text."

Regards,

Don Lum

This copper from New Cornelia Mine, Arizona, USA reminds me of a sargasso seahorse. Crystals to over 6 cm in length.

PostPosted: Feb 16, 2020 15:11    Post subject: Re: Collecting and imagining.

Hi, Tobi.

The stalagmite is 140x100 mm large. I got it 40 years ago from a worker in the travertine quarry of Montemerano who had glued it on a travertine pedestal from the same quarry.

You're right, in this piece the similarity is more evident than in others previously posted. Nonetheless, I see more resemblances in many of my specimens than in other high end minerals offered for sale as resembling something. Professional deformation..? :-) :-) :-)

Warm greetings.

Hello.

The Italian collectors call this stalactitic opal "Santa Fiora tears", since in Santa Fiora (on Mount Amiata) this material was found for the first time.

Best regards.

Hello Sante,

Your quartz specimen does indeed look like the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

I have been enjoying your posts. Please continue.

Regards,

Don
