Setting up an FMF homepage
I have looked at the collector’s pages – superb minerals. It got me thinking, is it possible to setup a collector’s page where the collector is the only one who can make contributions. It seems that anyone can add a photo to anyone else’s page. This becomes a distraction if one wants to highlight their own collection. |

That would come under the auspice of “Publicity” which is forbidden here. Its a forum meant for sharing, and monopolizing a thread to an individual opens abuse of advertising etc for personal financial gain. So if sharing is not acceptable you are free of course to create your own website on the internet somewhere for ONLY YOUR items, just don't link to it from here as that too is forbidden for the same reason. The moderators already have enough work to remove unwelcome spam/advertising posts and I see no reason to relax rules to allow others to abuse the forum even more. |

Thank you.
I noticed that Mindat allows one to setup a ‘personal’ homepage, and does so without any fears of advertising or other unwanted publicity on the part of the uploader.
I also note that FMF tends to get more views for an uploaded photo of a specimen than does Mindat for the same photo of the same specimen. I have looked at those mineral photos on FMF and compared them with the same mineral photo posted on Mindat in terms of view count.
I also note that those who have created a webpage related to their mineral collecting do so at considerable cost, and the benefits in terms of view counts are abysmal.
All in all, FMF provides more exposure for anyone starting out in the mineral collecting hobby. FMF is also well policed so anyone attempting to take advantage of the site would be detected very quickly.
Thus I see no problem. |
