Good luck, Dany, and a very warm greeting from Tuscany.

Good one, Vic. Marcie and I laughed our arses when we saw your mug shot. I'm not far from that look myself, complete with the "Here's Johnny!" greeting. Maybe this will start a new "look" and become quite the rage!

Today it's the Swiss National Day but I think one of the strangest in the history of the country with few manifestations.
For us, a little walk along the river Vièze in Morgins with a ferruginous source in the hearth of the Swiss Alps.
Hope everybody is safe and have a nice weekend.

Not a good idea to be out in the field with pointy bars sticking out of a sack full of steel. So, the Faraday cage of the control shack seemed like a good idea.

Coronavirus COVID-19 in the atmosphere ?
Although having been a teacher-researcher in chemistry at the university ULiege, I did not understand clearly the physical state and the means of transport of the virus in the atmosphere.
Today, talking about the Covis-19 has become a trivial article subject after a year of the invasion of this enemy.
By the presence of oxygen and water, the Earth's atmosphere is quite complex. The character of this atmosphere is essentially oxyphilic.
However in essence, virus particles constitute rather a non-polar organic medium.
Moreover, I had never seen an explanation of the selection of the hydro-alcoholic gel as the most recommended disinfectant, nor of the correlations between climatic parameters and the stability of the virus. It is for these reasons that I thought a lot about it while writing…..

Hi Don,
I am not a medical professional, nor even an amateur.
It was a choice I made when I was 18 and I have never regretted it.
Professional chemistry (and physics) has given me much more satisfaction.
I did not read the medical references because I am not able to measure their credibility.
What I see are often long sentences and statistics that mean nothing to me.
Anyway, do you know of an article that explains how the virus is transmitted in the atmosphere? How does hydroxyalcoholic gel work?
What interests me is the "view of the physical state" of the virus, at least in a virtual way. In other words, how do the little "hedgehogs" float in the air?
Many thanks.

Hello Roger,
This is the way I understand the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Viruses are present on aerosolized mucosalivary droplets expelled when an infected person speaks, coughs or sneezes. When another person comes along and inhales the aerosolized droplets, the virus enters the nasopharyngeal or oral cavity (mouth-breather) and attaches to the ACE-2 receptor on the surface of the cells of the respiratory tract including the alveoli. The ACE-2 receptor is the way the SARS-CoV-2 virus enters the human cells where it uses the host cells machinery to replicate. At some point the host cell bursts and many viral particles are released from the infected cells to infect other cells. This is why the antibody cocktails are important early in the process i.e. to reduce the viral load.
Alcohol kills germs through a simple chemical process known as denaturation. Denaturation occurs when alcohol molecules bond with the fat membrane encasing a virus or bacteria cell. As the fat membrane is broken down, the inside of the cell — including all of its critical components — becomes exposed.
This may be a simple answer to your question, but as you know I have a simple mind.
Regards,
Don

Hi Don,
Thank you for your answer, because my language as a chemist is not always well understood.
No, your mind is not at all simple. Quite the contrary.
You describe the same reality as me.
What I wanted to describe, like you but with other words, is how the virus travels through the air, because I am afraid of the virus. I am an old man. For that I had to imagine how these organic corpuscles managed to stay suspended in the air like tobacco smoke. For this, these virus corpuscles must be enclosed in a fog, even invisible.
When there is a humidity of 70%, we do not see the water vapor. However, these tiny droplets (nano) can carry the virus.
This is what worries me the most. The virus is almost in a gaseous state. This is the worst possible situation. It is really pernicious, the worst of all. We see it in London today.
Currently, I am almost under house arrest by the state, with little ability to travel. Of course I can buy food and possibly buy other items. But I can't go to a hairdresser for my hair (I barely have more hair).
It is absolutely necessary to wear the mask like the soldiers gassed in the Yser plain in 1914-1918. The air inlet must be closed off as much as possible from above the nose.

Roger,
The corona virus particles are 70–90 nm in diameter, so they can remain suspended in the air for quite some time.

I have been watching the college football national championship playoffs on television the last couple of weeks and have noticed something interesting in the segments between the action. It appears that there are mineral crystals similar to beryl and quartz crystals in the graphics. Don't know why but this is the first time I have seen this and I have been watching football on television for probably 60+ years.

I saw that too, and there were some that looked like ferberite and blue cap tourmaline. The graphic artist deserves some recognition. These were good!
