It was found on a Northumberland beach 2 years ago amongst the brown clay mixed in but this is a rock. Extremely heavy, smooth, brown, some pits in it. Not magnetic, impossible to chip any off. Does not look like any rock and I've scanned many databases. Measures 17cm long (see pics) just want to know what it is and why so heavy!

Gill

Probably an ironstone goethite nodule - I find them in Fife, Could you check the streak and hardness?

Tests 7 and 8 on this page and the results I expect you to get are:

Streak: yellowish-brown, orange-yellow, ocher-yellow
Hardness: 5 - 5½ on the Mohs scale

I agree with James. It does look a lot like an ironstone nodule.
