Same found, but is not the same specimen pictured in the page 74 of the January-February 2011 issue of the M. Record. It looks like but isn't.

A few shots taken yesterday, Friday February 4th at the Westward Look Show. Of course these will all be Mexican pieces. Not a lot of real smokers were out there when I visited the place but, these are the ones that caught my attention.
Apologies if the sizes are not given. The quality of the specimens makes it somewhat irrelevant. But they range from miniature to cabinet.

Today, back to the Tucson City Hotel. On the way there, a quick stop at the "Mineral and Fossil Market Place on Oracle to see Mexican dealer Holguin in his tent. Clearly lower quality material but all in quantity that can be purchased by the flat or on occasion as individual specimens. This is a great place to find some locality specimens if the better aesthetics is not mission critical. No rare species, generally run of the mill but the occasional, unusual such as cerrusite on goethite from Sta Eulalia (my photo did not turned out).

It is a good counterpoint to my boring and cold -without Show- Sunday here in Europe.

Jordi keeps after me to write something so here I go: this is a report from my temporary abode at "Camp Scovil" here at the Inn Suites where I am so fortunate to have a unique window into the Tucson scene as some of the most fabulous mineral and gem specimens of the show, if not the world, come through this door to have their portraits taken. I never get tired of watching Jeff work, nor of learning from both Jeff and Mark (Mauthner) - they are great mentors for me with their knowledge of mineralogy and the aesthetics of fine specimens; it is that which is behind a truly great mineral or gem photograph as everyone here already appreciates!
It has been wonderful meeting many members of the FMF for the first time, as well as old friends. The show here at the Inn Suites is incredible in its range-- I am here at Camp Scovil for the entire two weeks, but with no hope of even making a dent in seeing all there is to see from the vendors here, let alone out in the wider Tucson. My best finds here have been a trapiche grossular garnet, a multi-star rainbow andradite garnet from New Mexico and the pink grossular garnets shown below. Jeff took a break just now from his long day of shooting to image them for me (more in this thread I started earlier here: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=954). These grossulars are something I was particularly interested in obtaining for my library and Jordi had enthusiastically sent me over to Dennis Beals (Xtal, room 120) where I spent a good 2 hours learning all about the locality and and the characteristics. I was able to pick out some very affordable and representative specimens for my collection, including some splits which show the black cores, while also getting to view extraordinary larger examples which exceed the carry-on weight limit for my flight home.
As a gemmologist, I also have to relate my delightful experience last Sunday of walking around on an "inclusion tour" here at the Inn Suites with my friends Kristi and John Koivula; John being the author of the 3 volume PhotoAtlas series on inclusions, posted here by John White: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1112 I know that on the surface mineral dealers/collectors might not appreciate this aspect at first, but last evening Alfredo passed on a most apropos quote originating from someone to whom cut gems are an anathema (this uttered upon seeing an extraordinary inclusion within a fashioned stone): "Cut gems are merely precision trimmed matrix; the inclusion is the mineral specimen!" The microworld of minerals within minerals (and sometimes yet again within minerals 3x) is mineral appreciation of a different sort. Alfredo and I share a love of the....well, weird. Some of my best inclusion specimens come from this man, including natural volcanic glass from Bolivia with swarms of beautiful spessartite garnets within.
This ends my first week of the show; I look forward to the next week and the FMF dinner!

If Tucson is always intense, this year even more. The general impression is that the discouragement generated by the economic crisis has passed, at least in the U.S. and at least in what concerns to collectors specimens, with maybe the slight nuance that it seems that is a little bit harder than in the past to find buyers for the more expensive specimens.
By this Tucson's intensity, I do what I can do to publish columns, but is hard to find time to do so. Thanks to the other minsurfers which are also publishing their stories in this thread, which thus is more complete.

These are the Chrysocolla after Boleite from Boleo I mentioned before:
"- Very interesting and colorful pseudomorphs of Chrysocolla after Boleites and Cumengeites from recent finds in the Amelia Mine area. Also, it is reported that the Amelia Mine has been covered by tons of rubble from a new mine which will open soon. So, in some ways it is good news because this new mine could supply novelties in the future, but in another way is very bad, because with all these tons of rubble, the Amelia Mine probably will never more supply Boleites, Pseudoboleites, Cumengeites, etcetera....For more info about the new mine you can use -> http://www.bajamining.com/ "

I've been in Tucson for 2 days and have made it through just a few places --- spending way too much time talking to people. Anyhow... I've been to the Quality Inn near Benson Highway twice, mostly focusing on Chinese dealers. The show has been very slow for them, and there are lots of nice specimens, and some mediocre specimens with large prices. It always pays to look around. I found 3 dealers in particular with uniformly good quality and reasonable prices...I would encourage people interested in Chinese minerals to head up there. Here are some photos...

| An unusual combo of Beryl on Feldspar from Xuebaoding. This specimen is about 10-11 cm, and the Beryls have good color. This is from Shicheng's room and I took this piece home with me. She had lots of great Beryls and it took about 40 minutes to decide on this piece. |

Last night was the Old Farts meeting in Jesse and Joan's room at InnSuites. After spending all day wheelin' and dealin', I decided to stop in for an ale and fluorite. Of course, I could resist stopping in to see our Fearless Leader, Jordi, as his room was still open after most dealers close at 5pm.
