I got a new toy today - a stylus for my iPad, and I have the Sketchbook Pro app loaded.
I gave it a try and came up with this, a cinnabar specimen from Ukraine. The artwork is completely digitally created, mostly using the airbrush tool.

Steve

Hi crocoite.
Good job. Did you do that only by digital paintig ? Or with a base fron a photo or 3d Work.
Me, I have experimented digital artwork for minerals but only in 3D.
Here is an example of one of my work.

I used one of my own photos as a reference, but the artwork is all digital. It was also my first attempt and makes a change from painting watercolours. It took quite a bit longer too!
Yours is exceptional! Well done.

Thanks
The cystals were made with the software face, then export, textured, and render in Vue.
Here is an other:

Hi Steve and FBEC,
Very interesting stuff indeed. I have seen digital painting before but am intrigued by the techniques you are using FBEC. What is Face?
Good work, both of you!

Face is a french software for 3D drawing of crystals using Miller indices fir faces.
There is also an export in DXF. Like this crystals can be used in 3D softwares.
Face was made by George Favreau. It is very cheap and easy to use.

I like the contrast in styles. Steve's old school free hand airbrush technique, and FBEC's very precise, scientific rendering. Both very nice. Thanks, and keep it up.

FBEC - Your images are utterly mind-boggling, particularly the "Virtual aquamarine and garnet from Pakistan" with the reflections through the aqua crystals. Can we have lots more please.

Had she lived into the digital age, my mother would have really enjoyed seeing these 2 contrasting methods and results, as I did. She experimented with a number of art media, but her mainstays were oil and watercolor. Hope to see more of your images in the future!

Very impressive! It must be hard to make those drawings, but the result is astonishing and worth the efford!
Please keep posting these awesome drawings.
