PostPosted: Oct 19, 2011 21:46    Post subject: Minnesota apophyllite on calcite

We (son Greg and I) had a most remarkable find in a roadcut just south of Lutsen, Minnesota. There had been some fresh blasting and we happened by at the right time. There was a single flat, round vug about 40cm across full of pocket mud. Embedded in the mud were calcite crystals, many of which had apophyllite "pyramids" growing on them. Large calcite, never mind clear, well-crystallized apophyllite is unusual for Minnesota. I've attached a couple pictures.

Two large calcites sort of wrapped around each other, both with a few apophyllites gracing them. A surprising gift from the lavas of Minnesota's North Shore

I agree!

Why not publish these interesting specimens in: "A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - Minnesota" -> https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=1664 ?
