This remarkable specimen has spheres of graphite to almost 1 cm across. It is one of the finest such specimens I've seen (and I've looked through the graphite in many of the major museum's in the US and Canada). It is from the E. W. Heinrich collection. |

Hi to everybody!
I saw the graphite specimens from Merelani Tanzania. On the specimen shown on the right side I saw some beautiful and interesting green crystals. What mineral is it? Calcite too or...? I don't think it is just calcite and nothing else! But those crystals are very nice!

Hi Riccardo,
I'm sorry I forgot to include the details about the Merelani specimen.
The primary mineral of interest is gemmy diopside. You can see a close up of the
diopside crystals on an earlier page of this thread. The white crystals are mesolite with laumontite (verified by Raman and EDS). The pocket that produced these specimens
also contains gem-quality tremolite, pale zoisite, and lovely pale blue apatite; as well as small crystals of pyrite, siderite, chabazite, and gypsum. Surprisingly- no calcite.
