This post will finish up the Southern Illinois fluorspar district. Hopefully these few images will give some idea as to the variety and beauty of specimens that collectors enjoyed from these mines during their heyday.

Today I will start off with a jackstraw cerussite that is very similar to the Flux Mine specimens from Patagonia, Arizona. This one is from Colorado however, as are the other specimens.

Thank you for your kind comment Peter. I love the perfection that thumbnails often exhibit, and they are certainly easier to store.
This morning's post includes a few more pieces from Europe. The last is one of my all time favorites due to its history and the fact that I was able to spend 5 months in Iceland in the late 60s. I never found anything of this caliber, but had a great time trekking around this beautiful country.

Stilbite Teigarhorn, Berufjordur, Suour-Mulasysla, Iceland 5.8 x 9.4 cm This specimen has an interesting history. It was collected by Swedish geologist Carl Willhelm Paijkull during his expedition to Iceland and sold to the Natural History Museum in Stockholm around 1866. I often wonder where else it has resided until now. |
