Hi guys and gals, I have created an online mineral identification tool for rockhounds. You can find it right here:
https://whatmineral.com/
(link normalized by FMF)
I'd appreciate if anyone had any feedback for me, I want to make this as useful as possible. I hope this isn't considered spam as I'm not selling anything, just trying to help out. Thanks.
PS: The site might load slow right now as I'm getting slammed with traffic, I will update to a better host soon |

Suggestion number 1: Remove all photographs that are copyrighted by others -- including my photographs.
You must have signed copyright assignments from each copyright holder in order to use photographs off other sites. _________________ John Betts |

Hi John, I'm sorry about that. I found all the photos on wikimedia where they are released under Creative Commons license. The description specified I must attribute the work(which I did) to use the photos. Is that incorrect? Let me know which photos are yours and I will remove them. I'm not making money off of this I just wanted to help. |

I took a quick browse of your site and I think it looks great! The only suggestion I would have is to add multiple pictures for maybe different color varieties or crystal shapes to help aid in identification. |

This looks like a nicely thought out effort.
John is right about the copyright issues however. Many of your images are from Rob, and it seems that he uploaded to wikimedia under a Creative Commons agreement. It is possible that some of John's photos were posted without his permission which would violate his copyright and thus not be usable. The best thing to do is ask for specific permission. I suspect Rob will grant it, as will some others.
I am OK with you using photos my from either FMF or my website as long as you ask for specific photos ahead of time. I think most people will accommodate this non-commercial effort.

It doesn't play well with iPhone...
...and may have a few teething issues. For example, crocoite picture does not appear when you select colour red or orange. _________________ Regards

I will separately deal with Wikipedia. Please remove my images. _________________ John Betts |

I will second that Bob, he can use any of my photos too if he wants. _________________ Pierre Joubert

That's strange about the iphone, I have tried to optimize the website for mobile devices so that it can easily be used in the field. Everything should scale down to a single column. Could you tell me what it looks like when you go on it?
Also, it's strange that crocoite does not show up for you when you select orange or red, because it does for me. What browser are you using if I may ask?

I will do it John, no problem, I'm sorry for the inconvienience. It would be quicker if you told me which ones are yours.

Thank you so much Pierre, I really appreciate that.
If anyone finds any mistakes please post it here or email me at karmazon(at)gmail(dot)com. I have tried to be precise but with so many specimens there's bound to be few mistakes. |
