Here are a few unusual pieces...
Description: |
Calcite Flambeau Mine, near Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin, USA 81 x 69 x 43 mm
"Wheat sheave" shaped white Calcites to 32 x 16 mm, with pearly luster and light-red Hematite accents are perched on sparkly contrasting matrix of Calcite. Although there is some damage, this is a very rare and important specimen-one of only three Calcites found at the Flambeau Mine in Wisconsin, and the very best one found. It was collected by Casey Jones who sold it to F. John Barlow (#5972), and was later consigned to Casey upon dissolution of the Barlow collection. |

|
|
Here are a few from this huge iron mine...
Description: |
Calcite Hercules Mine, Municipio de Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico 191 x 87 x 65 mm
This cluster of Calcite crystals consists of both elongated scalenahedrons and butterfly twins (to 44 mm) with a reddish tinge from Hematite inclusions that deepens in color towards the centers of the Calcite crystals forming nice Hematite phantoms. The Calcites also display distinct chatoyancy. Although it presents damage around the margins where it was removed, it is one of the only surviving specimens from what was reportedly a large, several meters long cave completely covered by such Calcite. It was given to me by Francisco Aguilera who worked at the Hercules Mine and actually collected it. Casey Jones and I met Francisco through the mine office because he spoke some English. |

Description: |
Magnetite Hercules Mine, Municipio de Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico 69 x 55 x 33 mm
Black, octahedral Magnetite crystals to 25 mm are intergrown and lightly accented by rusty-red Hematite. In excellent conditon, this specimen was self collected during the 1993 Grossular collecting trip Graham and I took. The outcrop lies just outside the mine, and was pointed out to us by Felix who was a mining engineer at the Hercules mine, following some exploratory blasting. |

Good eye Bob. It would have been very easy to overlook this piece as just another "cactus quartz" typical of that area.

Everyone is familiar with the Rhodos from here, but few of the Apatite specimens are seen. Here is a specimen I picked up.

Stibnite with Fluorite Qinglong Mine, Dachang Sb Ore Field, Qinglong Co., Qianxi'nan Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, China

Most specimens from this locality are coated with pale Fluorite, but these Stibnite crystals are covered with strong lavender-purple Fluorite. |
