PostPosted: Oct 12, 2013 17:26    Post subject: Where's the best place to donate extra minerals?

Hello:

I have lots of extra minerals (mostly pyrite, calcite, quartz, etc..) that I do not need. These are not museum specimens, but I thought someone might like them. I remember as a kid a teacher gave me a cool rock 'Peacock' rock that I still have to this day, over 40 years ago.

Does anyone have any ideas of some places to donate them?

School (Elementary to High school)?
Colleges?
Mineral clubs?
Museums?

Thanks,
David

I look for local school teachers that are interested in including minerals in their courses. Try calling around to local middle / high schools.

That is an excellent answer! As an ex teacher I am well aware of budgetary restrictions and inability to get the right materials. I can think of no better way to donate what you have.

David,

I was just discussing that very question tonight with a fellow rock hound. The Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society has a gem dig and they have grab bags for kids at their annual show the last weekend in April every year. If you are interested Iet me know and I can send you the name of a contact person by PM. However it sounds like your specimens may be more suited for educational purposes.

Don

Check with Texas Earth Science Teachers Association (TESTA) and Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT).
Their Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST) is coming up in November.
I've donated before. They really appreciate it.
