I agree. That pyrite concretion at the bottom of the last page (2055 Pyrite concretion.jpg) is fantastic. It reminds me of a planet I've seen on a sci-fi movie sometime, but I just can't remember which film...
Thanks Michael.

Thank you Roger. And yes, Mike, every time I look at that concretion I think of a planetary body orbiting somewhere in the galaxy.

With today's post I decided to show a few specimens that I collected back in the early 1960s. Nothing spectacular, just examples of minerals that could be easily obtained at some of the many New England and Canadian localities that were open for collecting at the time.

Michael, I enjoy looking at your personally collected specimens. I guess the Herkimer Diamond was difficult to get out? :-)

That beryl from Renfrew Co. looks like an apatite, common in the area.

PostPosted: Dec 07, 2013 16:17    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

Thanks Don. Yes, the herkimers are in a very hard dolostone. It takes a lot of work with a heavy sledge. I would have liked to trim that specimen some more, but didn't want to risk the quartz breaking or popping out of the vug.

Joaquin, fluorapatite does occur at the Beryl Pit, but it is not common. The crystal I posted is very typical of the location, embedded in pink feldspar. Check out the Mindat site for this location - https://www.mindat.org/loc-6641.html. Of course beryl is much harder than the fluorapatite, and the latter is often difficult to collect because the crystals are so brittle and fracture easily. In my next post I'll show some apatites from the area.

Hi Michael. I agree with Don; lovely little rhodo. I do have a few mineral friends who are big in KMF mineral specimens. I still have to catch on. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your RSA specimens. Regards.

Thanks Roger, Don, and Pierre. I think the KMF has produced some of the most spectacular rhodochrosites of anywhere in world, and with a greater variety of crystal habits. The wheat-sheaf habit with the pale pink central zone seems to be the least common of these.
