PostPosted: May 23, 2014 14:52    Post subject: Capturing fluorescence in Fluorites

I have been playing with capturing fluorescence in Fluorites, and thought I'd share the results.

The specimen is from the Rogerley Mine which exhibits daylight fluorescence. So, I photographed it with photofloods, then added enough UV to simulate the appearance in daylight, then added more UV to show intensity of color. I tried to keep enough photoflood so the matrix is lit similarly in all photos.

The piece illustrated is:

a large, sharp, gemmy green, penetration twin of Fluorite, with cubes to 20 mm, and excellent transparency, are perched atop smaller, somewhat included Fluorite cubes, all on matrix. Like all Rogerley Fluorites, these are daylight fluorescent. This is an aesthetic specimen in excellent condition from Penny's Pocket.

Photographed using daylight balanced photofloods at about 2.5 second exposure. Only brightness and contrast were adjusted, and a sharpening filter applied.

Photographed using daylight balanced photofloods pulled back to just dimly light the specimen. A source of UV was held above the specimen at a height to just start showing fluorescence and not masking the green color, as is seen outdoors in the shade on these specimens. This is about a 10 second exposure. Only brightness and contrast were adjusted, and a sharpening filter applied.

Photographed using daylight balanced photofloods pulled back to just dimly light the specimen. A source of UV was held above and closer to the specimen to show strong fluorescence, as is seen outdoors in the sun on these specimens. This is about a 10 second exposure. Only brightness and contrast were adjusted, and a sharpening filter applied.

Nice results Bob. What kind of UV lamp did you use?
